am I the only one who thinks those ocs with backstories that are so 'tragic' like ran away from their home, abusive parents, dead parents, blah blah yada yada, are kinda cliche ???
im kinda tired of seeing them all the time

owo i've seen it a lot in my older friend groups.
uwu most of the time it's just them venting about their situations through their characters so i just tend to roll with it.

ye but i pretty much roll with everything xD

i'm way too chill sometimes
like pushover levels
like one day i didn't get to eat lunch because everyone in my group had kept putting their eating dishes (not cooking dishes) in the sink water and wouldn't wash it themselves
but i was like "eh i know it's pancake day but at least this one guy is helping me even though he's not in my group?"

Yeah, it's sorta overused. The thing is to get the parents out of the way so the story has little disruption, but I feel like there could be something better.

A good substitute for a missing parents type thing is if you make them action-heroes too, so they're used to this sort of thing.

they are overused but can also be used in a creative way if you know how to create good stories

Like if it's something like "traumatic experience makes me a murderer with scene hair" then I've seen it a lot but I try not to judge

Your icon is todoroki and he has an abusive father and he's a fictional character so that technically means he's someone's oc and his character isn't awfully cliche so that's an example of it done right?

ahah yes I give exceptions to those with a good story. Its true about that Todoroki does have an abusive father, so yes he's practically an example of it.
I've been trying not to say this but I just had to get it outta my system qwq"

No, you're not.  They're an overused trope within the oc community (though I'm guilty of it myself with a couple of my characters).  The only reason it's done though is to make others feel sad for your oc.  It's literally just there to gain a few fans and tears...nothing more.  Because more often than not when a character has a tragic backstory their personality will not reflect their hardships.  The only time I believe a 'tragic' backstory is acceptable is when the current personality reflects the hardships, lack of parental supervision, or even the effects of the abusive relationships that the character has gone through.  On the flip side, someone can go too far and make them too reflective and essentially make them an unlikable asshole.
